Therapeutic Parent Coaching is a way to help people maximize their parenting potential, by providing them with tools to be the best parent they can! Everyone comes to the role of parenting with his or her own personal history and experiences, which inevitably affects one’s parenting approach and style. Therapeutic Parent Coaching helps people understand how past experiences affect the present dynamics of their parenting, whether positively or negatively. Parents will gain a deeper understanding of themselves and will be coached on how to raise resilient and emotionally healthy children. They will also learn the importance of and methods to tailor their parenting approach to meet the specific needs of each individual child.
Any parent who finds him or herself feeling frustrated, emotionally exhausted, impatient, perplexed, inadequate, unsure or any of the myriad of sentiments parents feel when they realize that children do not come with instruction manuals. Parenting is the most important and difficult challenge many people will ever face and in most instances, there is very little in the way of preparation or training. Therapeutic Parent Coaching helps people develop positive and successful parenting strategies, individually tailored to their own families and children.
Typically Therapeutic Parent Coaching begins with a thorough assessment of a person’s own parenting approach and style and a detailed discussion as to which techniques are and are not working effectively. Parents will set goals, discuss strategies, and develop tools to maximize their parenting potential. Because parents often find themselves in new and unfamiliar situations, they are often unsure of how to react to situations. This dilemma often leads to impetuous or regrettable reactions. It can also cause parental indecisiveness, followed by parent-child negotiation and mixed signals to children who need very clear boundaries. Therapeutic Parent Coaching utilizes role-playing techniques in both real-life and hypothetical situations, thereby enabling parents to better anticipate the issues and establish a clear plan for how to handle them when they arise.
